OCIA: The Order of Christian Initiation of Adults

Are you—or someone you know—interested in learning more about the Catholic faith? Considering becoming Catholic? Seeking to complete your Sacraments of Initiation?

Our Exploring Catholicism / OCIA program is designed for:

  • Adults new to the Catholic faith
  • Baptized Christians seeking full communion with the Church
  • Baptized Catholics who have not yet received Confirmation or Eucharist
  • Anyone who simply desires to learn more

OCIA is a journey of discovery, prayer, catechesis, and community—guided by the teachings of the Church and supported by parish sponsors.

If you feel called to serve as a sponsor in OCIA, we are always looking for compassionate, faithful parishioners willing to accompany adults on their path to the sacraments.

What is OCIA?

The Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA) is a process for adults who want to join the Catholic Church. It's a journey of faith that includes prayer, study, and community participation.

How does OCIA work?
  • Participants, known as catechumens, study the Gospels and Catholic teachings
  • They profess their faith in Jesus and the Catholic Church
  • They receive the sacraments of baptism, confirmation, and Eucharist
  • They develop a life of prayer and action
  • They meet with the local Christian community
History
  • The OCIA process is based on an ancient practice of the church
  • The Second Vatican Council restored it in the 1960s
  • It was formally approved for use in the United States in 1974
Who can participate?
  • Non-baptized adults can participate in the OCIA
  • Most Christians will not be re-baptized because the Catholic Church recognizes the baptism of most Christian denominations
How do I get started?

Our OCIA group meets on Sunday morning following the 8:30 AM Mass in the Conference Room in the Parish Hall, behind St. Joseph Church.
